Stranger Things Season 5 is on the horizon and it feels like the perfect time to rewatch the entire series from the beginning. As I revisit the older seasons and analyze the new leaks and pomos for season 5, I’ve noticed some subtle hints suggesting that one of our favorite characters might not make it out alive this time. There are subtle hints and clues that this fav favourite character might not make it out alive.
Season 4 of Stranger Things premiered in 2022 and was a massive hit among fans. However, one recurring criticism was that none of the major characters had actually died. That might change in the upcoming final season because the stakes are much higher.
There have been several theories about what to expect in Season 5. And one of these predicts that Steve Harrington (Joe Keery) could die in the final season. While it sounds shocking at first, there are several convincing clues to back it up.
The Funko Pop Clue
Back in 2023, the Duffer Brothers shared a fun behind-the-scenes video on Instagram showing how they used Funko Pops to plan early Season 5 scenes. Fans noticed that while most of the characters’ figures like Eleven, Will Byers, Joyce Byers, Nancy Wheeler and Robin Buckley were standing upright, Steve’s Funko Pop was lying flat on the table.
It might sound like a stretch, but fans immediately began speculating that this could be a subtle foreshadowing of Steve’s death.
The “Run” Scene from the Teaser
Netflix released a short promo for Stranger Things 5 in May 2025. At the very end, Will Byers can be heard screaming “Run” to someone off-screen. Initially, fans didn’t know who he was shouting at, until a behind-the-scenes leak surfaced.
YouTuber Tate100T shared footage from the season 5 set, showing the cast and crew filming that exact scene. The leaked audio confirms that Will is yelling to Steve:
Moments later, a blood-curdling scream can be heard. This led fans to believe that Steve might be the one in serious danger.
Nancy’s Emotional Scene in Season 5 Teaser
In the recent Season 5 teaser, Nancy Wheeler is shown crying as she washes blood off her hands. This led fans to believe that this could be her reaction to losing someone close to her.
Many suspect that person could be Steve Harrington, which would explain why she was crying in the scene.
The Complicated Love Triangle
Nancy and Steve dated back in Season 1 but she later moved on with Jonathan Byers. Still, the chemistry between Nancy and Steve never really faded. In Season 4, they grew closer again, sparking debates within the fandom over who Nancy truly belongs with.
If Steve dies in the final season, it could bring emotional closure to that long-running love triangle. It would also deliver one of the show’s most devastating moments. Steve has also developed a strong relationship with the others, often referring to himself as a babysitter. He will likely sacrifice himself for the others and Steve’s death would ultimately hurt Dustin the most.
Steve’s History of Escaping Death
Steve has survived countless close calls throughout the series. In Season 1, he was beaten by Jonathan and was later attacked by Demogorons. In Season 2, he fought Billy Hargrove and nearly lost.
He was again captured and beaten by the Russian soldiers in Season 3. Even in Season 4, he was mauled by demobats in the Upside Down.
It seems almost impossible for his luck to hold out one more time. Fans worry that Season 5 might finally be the end for him.
He Was Originally Meant to Die in Season 1
In the original script for Season 1, Steve was supposed to die. But the Duffer Brothers saw potential in his character and decided to keep him alive. That choice paid off as Steve evolved from a selfish high school jock to one of the most beloved characters in the series.
Now that Stranger Things is coming to an end, the creators might revisit that original plan.
Steve’s Redemption Arc Might Be Complete
Steve’s journey has been one of the most satisfying arcs in Stranger Things. In season one, he was an absolute jerk and arrogant teenager, to a selfless hero. But he’s proven time and again that he’s willing to risk everything for his friends.
If Season 5 does end with Steve sacrificing himself, it would be a fitting but heartbreaking conclusion to his story.

With all these clues and theories in play, it’s entirely possible that Steve Harrington could meet his end in Stranger Things Season 5. Still, fans are hopeful that the Duffer Brothers won’t kill off one of their most beloved characters. If they do, the fandom will undoubtedly erupt in heartbreak and outrage.
